The two-second test for a blocked bathroom fan
Switch the fan on and hold a square of toilet paper flat against the grille. If the fan holds it up, it is pulling. If it drops, the fan is running but shifting almost nothing, and the steam from every shower is staying in the room with you.
Have a look at the grille while you are there. A grey mat packed between the vanes, and a fine speckle spreading across the ceiling around it, is a bathroom fan that stopped working properly a while ago.
Why Darwin punishes a blocked extractor fan
The air coming into a Darwin bathroom is already humid, so the fan has far less margin than the same unit would down south. Choke it with lint and it stops clearing steam at all. Condensation sits on the walls, towels never quite dry, and mildew starts around the vent and along the cornice.

- Cleaning only. If the fan is dead, hums without spinning or trips the switch, that is an electrician. We do not touch motors, wiring or replacements.
- We clean the cover, the fan and the housing behind it. We do not clean the duct run through the ceiling or the vent up on the roof.
- Surface mould and mildew on the cover, the housing and the ceiling around the vent comes off in the clean. Mould inside the ceiling cavity is a specialist job, and we will tell you if that is what it looks like.

Is an extractor fan the same as an exhaust fan?
Yes. Extractor fan, exhaust fan, vent fan, ceiling vent: all the same unit doing the same job, which is pulling damp air out of the room. Australian installers and manuals usually say exhaust fan, plenty of people say extractor fan. Whichever you call it, we clean the cover, the blades and the housing behind it.
How much is bathroom exhaust fan cleaning?

My bathroom is still steamy after a clean. Why?
Two usual causes. Either the fan itself is faulty rather than blocked, which needs an electrician, or the room has nowhere to draw replacement air from. A fan pulling against a closed door and a sealed window moves very little, so leaving the door ajar for ten minutes after a shower makes a bigger difference than people expect.
Can you clean the mould around the vent?
The surface mould and mildew on the cover, the housing and the ceiling right around the vent comes off in a standard clean. What we do not do is remediation: mould inside the ceiling cavity or spreading behind the plaster needs a specialist, and we will say so if that is what we find rather than wiping the visible part and leaving you thinking it is sorted.
How long does a bathroom fan take?
About ten minutes for a standard ceiling-mounted fan, which is why it slots onto a ceiling fan booking without changing the day. A fan that has never been cleaned takes longer because the lint has to come out in one piece rather than in flakes across the vanity.
Do you clean bathroom fans in rentals?
