Grease is a different problem to dust
Cooking puts a fine oil mist into the air. The rangehood pulls it through, and some of it lands on the fan instead of leaving the house. Once there is a tacky film on the blades every bit of kitchen dust sticks to it, so the layer builds up instead of blowing off the way dust does on a ceiling fan.
In Darwin that film stays soft most of the year, which sounds better than it is. Soft grease holds more dust, and it creeps across the housing, the underside of the hood and the wall behind the cooktop.
The signs your rangehood fan is choked
The fan sounds like it is working and the kitchen still smells like last night's dinner. Steam off a pot rolls out sideways instead of straight up. There is a brown tide line on the underside of the hood.

The cooktop and bench get covered first. We take the fan and the housing behind it, cut the grease off, and wipe down the housing and the visible underside of the hood. Then a before-and-after photo, the same as every fan we clean.
It is the slowest fan in the house, so it is worth adding to a ceiling fan clean rather than booking it on its own.

Do you clean the rangehood filters?
No, and it is worth knowing why. Metal mesh and baffle filters are designed to come out and go through hot soapy water or a dishwasher, which you can do yourself in ten minutes. Charcoal cartridges in recirculating hoods are a replacement part. We clean the fan and the housing behind the filters, which is the part you cannot get at.
Do you clean inside the ducting?
No. We clean the fan and the housing it sits in. Ductwork running through the ceiling or out to a roof vent needs a duct specialist with camera and cleaning gear made for it, so if that is what your enquiry is really about we will tell you rather than quote around it.
Do you do commercial kitchen rangehoods?
No. Commercial kitchen exhaust systems, canopies and their ducting are a specialist trade with its own compliance requirements, and we are not it. What we do handle in hospitality is the ceiling and wall fans in the dining area, which is on our commercial fan cleaning page.
How often should a rangehood fan be cleaned?
Sooner than the rest of the house if you cook most nights. Grease builds up on a schedule set by cooking rather than by weather, so once a year suits most Darwin kitchens and every six months suits a kitchen that gets a wok out. If the hood is leaving smells in the room, it is already overdue.
Can you do it as part of an end-of-tenancy clean?
